Today, I discovered that the Mangos location was at one time a restaurant and bar called Poets. Whilst looking into this, I found that the original restaurant there had been called the Seahorse which opened in 1943. I suspected that I had a photograph somewhere in the vaults and here it is.
I couldn’t find out much about the restaurant apart from the fact that was opened by Sam Harris who moved to Fort Lauderdale from Illinois in 1943. Sam was the son of a Greek immigrant who had arrived to the United States as a twelve year old. His original Greek name was Stamatis Hourdakis.
His son George also worked in the business when he returned from serving in the Army Air Corps.
I don’t suppose anyone remembers the Seahorse?
