Las Olas, Riverwalk and Riverfront

There seems to be so much confusion online about the difference between Las Olas Boulevard, the Riverwalk Park and the Riverfront complex. Let’s hope this helps to put things right.

Let’s start with Las Olas Boulevard. The boulevard stretches for about two and a half miles, beginning at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale in the west and ending at the beach and the famous Elbo Room in the east. In between the two there’s a wide variety of restaurants, bars, pubs, galleries, boutiques, bakeries, treat stores, gourmet food stores, gift stores, fashion boutiques, bridal stores, consignment stores, a dog grooming salon, spas, salons, a historic home museum and more. You’ll also find useful businesses such as the post office, banks, a pharmacy, dry cleaners, UPS, real estate agents and a lot more besides.

Riverwalk Park is an extension of Las Olas and is a linear park that runs alongside the water. This is a beautiful place to stroll and watch the water traffic as it goes by. It leads to the Museum of Discovery and Science and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts – both great places to visit. The Riverwalk often holds events too such as the Jazz Brunch on the first Sunday of every month.

Now, the Riverfront. The Riverfront – which is often erroneously referred to as the ‘Las Olas Riverfront’ is a relatively modern mall-type complex. In its heyday, now sadly gone, there were plenty of stores and restaurants. This is no longer the case. On the Trip Advisor website there is a section for the ‘Las Olas Riverfront’ and yet many of the comments there are about the Riverwalk or even Las Olas Boulevard! You can see why it’s confusing. ;)

Here are examples – remember all are in the Riverfront section!

There are so many little shops and cafes and bars…you can’t get wrong! It can be romantic, or just plain fun!

Used to be a great riverside mall in Fort Lauderdale, with a movie cinema and tons of cafes and restaurants and nightclub lounges. One by one, they all closed up, this mall is now a virtual ghost town. Visited August 2011 (This refers to Riverfront)

It’s a nice place to just go and relax and walk and see the boats and yachts go by and if you want you an take the water taxi. Visited August 2011 (This refers to Riverwalk Park)

If you love art, there are several types of art galleries, fine table cloth dining on the streets, some days there are musicians playing or singing. There is meter parking behind the stores, and if you don’t want to walk around, you can take the water taxi. There is so much to see and do, there are two museums, a park with a beautifully lighted water fountain. On certain Sundays they have jazz in the park. The night life is beautifully entertaining. It’s a great place to visit during the day or night it’s just an excellent place to visit anytime during the day or night. Visited July 2012 (This refers to Las Olas Boulevard AND Riverwalk!)

You can see why people get confused! Never fear – I can assure you that Las Olas Boulevard and the Riverwalk Park are musts when you come to Fort Lauderdale. :)
