Girls’ night out day

Yes, it’s Girls’ Night Out Day. I know that doesn’t make much sense. It’s a bit like A Hard Day’s Night, but still, it’s the name I’ve decided on for today. Why?

March 8th is International Women’s Day. Any excuse for a party, right? The day is described, somewhat dryly, as ‘a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.’ All over the world, events take place, although I’ve been unable to find any taking place in our area. I wonder why that is?

It’s a great opportunity to raise awareness for women’s issues and charities. For example, in the UK the Vaginellas are a group of female poets working in fun and new ways to promote poetry and women’s issues and are holding events to draw awareness to breast and other cancers. There are exhibitions of portraits of notable women, exhibitions by female artists,  creative writing contests, groups to help mothers who are returning to work, free salon days for carer-givers, a female composer search,  female entrepreneur networking events, photographic exhibitions, cabarets … so much.

So, as I can’t find any events going on nearby,  if you’re looking for an excuse for a girls’ night out on Las Olas, this is it! Ladies, enjoy the day. Gentlemen, treat your lady today. You’ll find everything you need on Las Olas. Arrange your own celebration or awareness event.

Celebrate the women in history who made the boulevard what it is today. Visit the Stranahan House to learn more. Go back a lot further in time at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. See paintings such as Madonna and Child by Sandro Botticelli, The Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John and Mary Magdalene and the recently-restored Madonna with Child and Saint Catherine.

Patronize women-owned businesses on the boulevard today. (Sorry guys, it’s just one day 🙂 )

And to veer away from my usual frivolity for a moment, I suggest that your shopping spree or gift-buying takes place at Mission Gifts on Las Olas. Many of the products at this fair trade store are made by, or benefit, women worldwide who have been rescued from situations that you don’t even want to think about.

Have a wonderful Girls’ Night Out Day – enjoy. And remember what we used to say in the seventies – ‘when God made man, She was only practicing” 🙂
