Do you know where this is on Las Olas?

Yesterday I was looking through my archives of photographs to find an image of the Seahorse Restaurant – which was in the location where Mangos Restaurant and Lounge is now. When I was looking through these – and it was great fun – I found a bygone image that I couldn’t quite locate at first.

I know Las Olas pretty well but I couldn’t figure out just where this one was taken. Or when – often the cars give it away but pickup trucks didn’t really change for a lot of years and the only really noticeable one is the pickup. But I couldn’t figure it out. It looked so familiar but I couldn’t get it until my favorite photographer took a look and he got it straight away.

At first, I thought it was the gas station where Luigi’s Pizza now stands. I remember that gas station well – they used to actually pump your gas for you – none of this self-service malarkey. But if that was the case, the Floridian would be on the other side of the street and not that familiar-but-not-quite blue building.

Then I thought that it’s probably where 7-Eleven is now. That seemed to ring true as the wall on the right of the photograph looks to be the eastern side. And of course, I thought, the blue building was demolished to make way for the hospital. But it still didn’t seem quite right …

Then my favorite photographer appeared after his beach walk and dawn photography session. He recognized it straight away.  Did you? If you want to think about it for a while DON’T scroll down.

You’ve got it, haven’t you?

Quite an old photograph but I bet you recognize it now.
